Our Curriculum - Year 7/8 Kaitiaki Leadership programme

Leadership at St Patrick’s School Kaiapoi is not just about the staff, PTA and Board. We are blessed at the intermediate level at St Patrick's to have tamariki who demonstrate maturity, have the ability to think critically, relate to others and have a willingness to support and guide their peers through their time at primary school. The model below is a plan for how we envision St Patrick’s Kaiapoi to be led at a student level and how the student voice will be heard through a Tuakana-Teina approach. As well as the older tamariki supporting the younger students we want our leaders to be leaders within their own learning through pursuing their passions and exploring possible future career options. This is the initial structure and may be altered after staff and community input. In 2018 we trialled this initiative for the first time.
The Kaitiaki leadership programme is important to us because:
- With the introduction of PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) to our school, we see this as an action moving forward and a way to enforce our 3Cs here at St Patrick’s, starting with our senior students.
- It is an opportunity for our senior students to come together, develop closer relationships and work together as a team.
- This team is going to be supportive, active in developing a sustainable environment, upholding the core values of St Patrick’s Kaiapoi and representing the school’s identity with pride.
- There is a need to enhance the identity of the senior school through leadership growth.
